Feminism is a topic I very much enjoy. Why? Well, believe it or not, many moons ago I saw the world mainly through a woman’s perspective. I came to feminism the way some people come to social movements in their early years: out of self-interest. Oh, you don’t want me get into what I used to think about women who stayed at home to raise babies, or what I thought about men in leadership. haa haa…No, I can honestly say that I have a much balanced perspective today when it comes to women’s role on this earth. Nonetheless, this topic is still a strong interest of mine.
So, where are we today?? Well, I’ve extracted some quotes of successful leading women from this week’s issue of Newsweek. You can decide for yourself where we stand today in our society.
“Today young women are defining success on their own terms. I think they actually have much more perspective than my generation. Young women are not necessarily looking at senior management as being fulfilling. In the process of balancing everything - whether it is child-care responsibilities or taking care of parents - it becomes their own decision to leave.” – Joyce Chang, Managing Director, JPMorgan
“I think the concept that women are more emotional at work is an outdated cliche. I tend to be more on the side of the quantitative, analytical, data-driven.” — Marissa Mayer, VP of search products, Google
“When I was told 40 years ago that I should learn to type so I could someday type papers for my boyfriend. I didn’t know what I wanted, but I knew it wasn’t that.” — Anna Quindlen, columnist of Newsweek “The Last Word”
“I guess I’ve always felt more comfortable doing more than one thing at a time. I think women in particular gain strength from operating in different spheres.” — Karenna Gore Schiff, laywer and author
“I’m often asked what it’s like to work in such a male-dominated environment. I don’t think or see the world as a man’s environment, a woman’s environment, a black environment, a white environment, Hispanic environment. I just see the world.” — Gwen Sykes, Chief Financial Officer, NASA
“I’ve learned that it’s very important for women to reach out to each other. I think we can be very catty and callous and unsupportive of each other at times…We’re not secure in our ownselves and it causes us to do really heinous things to each other. And so for me, it’s always going to come back to working on your own self-esteem and working on your own self-confidence.” — Queen Latifah, Entertainer
